I still sometimes wish she came with a users manual

This last weekend we were visiting family and Adelyn had just fallen asleep. I said "she's going to wake up in 30-45 minutes and act like she's wide awake, but she just needs to be soothed back to sleep".....needless to say, 35 minutes later she woke up....but they got her up and started playing with her. I sat by thinking "she's going to get crabby and harder to get back to sleep....". I don't know why I didn't say anything...I should have....because Addy got fussy about 10 minutes later and I had to fight with her for the next 20 minutes to get her to go back to sleep. I said in passing later "she needed to go back to sleep when she woke up earlier" and my family member (whom I love and respect) said "oh she was fine"....I wanted to say "no! she wasn't! she needed to keep sleeping!" I wish I would have....but I just let it go.
Adelyn likes her pacifier....for years--after observing some of my mom's daycare babies--I decided I would let my kids have a pacifier only to sleep and calm down when they got super cranky....and that's what we've done with Adelyn. When she gets really tired or cranky, the pacifier helps calm her down and she falls alseep alot easier.
I know that some people grew up thinking pacifiers were "bad" or just "not necessary"...but our daughter likes hers so what's the big deal? Still...I've had people hold her when I've gotten her calmed down....she has her pacifier...they take it out and say something like "you don't need that" or "let's take this out" and she starts fussing within a few minutes and I just want to say "I told you so". Today I dropped her off in the dayare while I went to the gym. She was getting tired and needing to go to sleep... and the lady in the room said "she's not going to need her pacifier, I'll get her to sleep without it"....I just shrugged and let it go...when I came back in Addy had her pacifier and I asked if they got her to sleep without it (knowing that they did not) and she said "she was fussing for a good 10 minutes...I gave it to her and she was out within seconds". I had to bite back my tongue from saing " I told you so".
Writing out these events has encouraged me b/c it reminds me that Nick and I are getting to know our daughter. They are also reminding me that I need to speak up more often. Adelyn is our daughter, our responsibility and I can't just "let it go" anymore. This is where it gets tough because I am not good with speaking up when I should. There are still alot of moments when we have no idea what she wants and we just have to let her cry it out a bit and try again later....but we are getting there and I am so grateful. :)

I love these exersaucers...my mom always had one for the daycare babies and I found this farm one at Target yesterday. Adelyn loves to be standing and able to look around, so I thought it'd be perfect....the box says for 4 months and up, but I figured what's a couple weeks, right? ;) ha...

she's too short still, so her feet hang...and she can't hold herself up in the seat for too long yet... but I don't think she minded it :)

a good weekend

This weekend, Ray came down Saturday and spent the night with us. Sunday morning, the 4 of us drove up to Harlan and Adelyn got to meet Great Grandpa and Great Grandma Flies. Nick and Ray played cards with Grandpa and Grandma while Adelyn and I mostly watched....of course she was in the mood to eat almost all day so I was feeding her the majority of the time...that and I'm just not the greatest card player :) but we had fun and are hoping to get up there to visit again soon.

Silly girl

Adelyn was having a rare fussy moment last night....this is the only thing that would calm her down! I guess earlier that night while I was at the gym, Nick had her in the bjorn like this and she fell asleep. Ha. :) She just likes to be able to see and look around :)

2 months old today! Adelyn's stats:

11 lb 13 oz: 75th percentile for weight

22 3/4 inches: 55th percentile for length

38cm: 30th percentile for head circumference

AND most of you know from day 1, Adelyn has been able to hold her head up (she's crazy).... now she holds her head and chest up off the ground for about 40 seconds and holds her head up when you sit her or stand her...the pediatrician came in and was like "um, that's really good...she can do what most 4 month olds are just learning to do"....our newly parent hearts are so proud :)

I am in tears right now. Tonight we decided to work on some "discipline" with Adelyn. After her bath and feeding, we laid her down in her cradle...AWAKE...WITHOUT ROCKING HER TO SLEEP. She is actually doing pretty well...she hasn't been wailing for an hour straight like I thought she would, but she is wailing. :( She cries for 10 minutes, is quiet for a few minutes, then starts up again...but the minutes between crying are getting longer, so I think that's a good thing, right? I know the earlier you start, the easier it can be...but still...my baby is crying and I HATE it because I know I could stop it by just getting her up and rocking her...but I know it is necessary for her to learn to fall asleep on her own...we are trying to cultivate a habit of self discipline for her...but I think it's also going to be an experience of learning for Nick and I too....
So to make this post "happier" (more for my sake than for yours) :) I'm going to add some pictures Nick took of her on Saturday while we were visiting my dad and step-mom...
on a better note: Adelyn is smiling at us now! It's so fun! I have it on video, but I can't get it to post...so stay tuned and hopefully I can get it to work...
